Forming part of the Windward Islands in the eastern Caribbean, the archipelago of St. Vincent and the Grenadines comprises the main island of St. Vincent, locally called the 'mainland' and over 30 smaller islands and cays collectively called the Grenadines, each with its own tantalizing attractions. Total land area is 388 sq km of which St. Vincent covers 344 sq km. The islands enjoy a tropical climate with annual temperature ranging from 26 to 31 degrees Celsius. It is hot and wet in summer and quite dry January through May, April being the driest month. July, meantime, can bring brief but heavy rain showers. It is not that easy to reach the island (mainly via Barbados or other Windward Islands), but once you arrive you will find excellent sailing and the inter-island travel, mainly by ferry.

Kingstown, situated on the south west coast of St. Vincent, is the island's capital and prime commercial port largest city, bordered by the Caribbean Sea. It has been described as a 'working town' and a busy port city but it is less popular with tourists. Here you can find rum shops, restaurants, souvenir shops and at least four historic churches. Kingstown is also famous for many tan and black-sand beaches, where tourists will surely find tranquility and full relaxation. Those who are more adventurous can go hiking in the Vermont Nature Trails, located north of Kingstown. You can also visit Botanical Gardens where there are a lot of interesting tropical plants, including trees two centuries old. For a fairly small town, Kingstown offers interesting sights and historic buildings.
St. Vincent and the Grenadines magnificent beaches are perhaps the greatest highlights of this island chain in the Caribbean. You will find the best St. Vincent beaches distributed throughout the various islands, mainly on the western and southern coasts, including Mustique-famous for its wonderful white-sand beaches, Canouan-ringed by soft white beaches and blue lagoons, Bequia-home to Princess Margaret Beach and Lower Bay. One of the most famous swimming beaches on St. Vincent is black-sand Villa Beach, which sometimes can get quite crowded.
