Tromelin island

Guide to Tromelin island

Talking about this tiny wonderful island of Tromelin, I can't resist myself not telling the beautiful and exciting story of its discovery. In 1761 as a result of a shipwreck 125 people survived and found themselves on this sandbank. This island, absolutely deserted, without a single tree and shrub, is 350 km. far from the nearest corner of civilization - Madagascar. The survivors of the shipwreck were on the sand under the scorching sun for about 2 months until they built a small wooden raft. Repairing the ship, half of them went to Madagascar, leaving 60 people on the island, as the ship couldn't carry all of them. They promised to be back for them by all means, but the Government of Madagascar prohibited this. People in Tromelin patiently waited for two years. Seeing no signs and losing their hope, they began to build their own raft to reach Madagascar. All their attempts failed and many of them died on the way. After 15 years on this uninhabited island, only 7 women and an eight-month-old boy were finally saved by Chevalier de Tromelin, a French officer, after whom the island was called Tromelin.

At present Tromelin is a sea turtle sanctuary. It is also a site of an important meteorological station. The Tromelin island is uninhabited till now and is constantly visited by different scientists who carry out their investigations here. The island is under the territory of France.

Tromelin is known to the world for its unique vegetation and a rare bird life. There are many seabirds or marine birds here, which are very uncommon and vary from all the other birds in their lifestyle, appearance and behavior.

Tromelin island is home to many herbaceous plants and coral reefs, also found under the water.

The island cannot attract tourists with luxurious hotels having high class room and excellent service, different parks and historical sightseeing, as it has none of the listed. However, those who are looking for more extreme travel destinations, who are eager to find hidden places on this planet, to explore uninhabited lands and why not experience many life difficulties in the nature, unlike our modern comfortable life, equipped with everything that makes it easy for us to live, should think of Tromelin for instance. People who wonder how our ancestors used to live and survive between the sky and the earth and nothing else, without electricity, mass and media communication, simple devices that are so necessary in our everyday life, should gather together and take a "study" tour to such small islands, as Tromelin. Be sure to find the answers to all of your questions here and at the same time experience a unique, not typical rest in the nature.

Currently Tromelin is not open for touristic visits and has no resorts and hotels. Nevertheless, its white perfect sand, colorful underwater life, all year round sunny, wonderful tropical weather, plants and fetching coral reefs together form a great opportunity for the development of the island and making it a gorgeous touristic center one day.
