Wake is famous for its beautiful nature. Around 21 species of flowering plants have been found on the island, the dominant tree being the Tournefortia or tree heliotrope. It has a height of about 20 feet, with an umbrella-shaped canopy of rosettes of large leaves, covered with silvery hair. Pisonia grandis or "buka" tree has soft wood, sticky flowers and fruit. Wilkes Island is surrounded by the bushes of Pemphis acidula. There are many other trees, bushes, flowers decorating the island and making up the fetching and fresh forests.
The island stands out for its bird life consisting of a dozen species of sea birds, lots of migratory species and the famous flightless rail.
